Have you ever taken time to envision what a perfect day in your life even looks like to you? We all have dreams at some point or another about owning that dream car, traveling first class worldwide a few times a year, or living in your oceanside mansion (and your quant rustic cabin during the fall foliage – I’m not alone here, am I?). But are those truly what you want for your future or what you think you “should” want?
Too often, we have lots of ideas spinning in that little head of ours but we don’t take the time to really figure out what we truly want. And when you don’t know what you want, how can you create a pathway there? If you are tired of saying “Someday I’ll have…” keep reading to learn what my 7 steps are for designing your dream day and ultimately making it a reality!
1. Do a dream dump.
Start listing all the things that inspire you and that you aspire to do or have in your future dream life. Go wild with it. Do you want to be a famous movie star? Do you want to live in a tiny home? Do you want to travel the world and see a new country every month? Do you want to have a fancy car? Where do you want to be working? Do you want to be working? Do you want a family? Get everything out on paper, and then some more.
2. Reflect on the things that currently bring you joy in your life.
Who, what, + where do you find yourself feeling giddy? Or excited? Or at peace with? Do another reflection on the people, places, things, and activities that are currently bringing you joy. What + who brings you the most energy?
3. Write out your Dream Day.
Now let’s go into the details of what a day-in-the-life would look like if you were living your dream life. Write down all the details from the moment you wait up to the time your head hits the pillow at night. Do you want to sleep in until 10 AM? Do you want to wake early for a sunrise run along the beach outside of your patio doors? Do you dream of finishing your workday by 3 PM and meeting your besties for an early Happy Hour? Get deep. What are the smells, sights, and sounds that encompass your day? Where are you? What are you doing? Who are you with? What type of people do you want to be hanging out with? What are you doing for work? For fun? What are your rituals?
4. Reflect on your thoughts + feelings around this Dream Day.
When you look back at what you just wrote, how do you think you feel when you wake up each morning knowing this life is ahead of you? What is the thought that you are thinking? How do you feel at the end of the day? Write out the top 3 feelings your dream day creates for you.
5. Get specific with the “must-haves” and the “non-essentials”.
Now a lot of what you put down in your dream day may be extravagant + could be delightful, but they aren’t essential. (Just something fun to dream about). But there are the things in there that would be necessary to create the feelings you mentioned in the previous step. What are they?
6. Align your Dream Day with your Current Reality.
Now here comes the important part, bridging the gap between what you currently have and what you dream of having. Are there some things in your Dream Day that you already have? Are there things that seem to be missing? What can you start doing now to become more aligned with your dream day? What things are currently stopping you from aligning with your Dream Day? Are there any decisions that you could make to fast-track you to your dream day and your dream life? What are 3-5 things you could do this month to get you closer to living into this day and your dream life?
7. Keep your Dream Day vision close + review it often.
While doing this exercise in and of itself is wonderful, don’t just toss it in a drawer and forget about it. Keep it somewhere close by where you can easily access it or see it often. Reflecting on it often will help to inspire you to help you make the changes you desire. You’ll be surprised when you look back on this “Dream Day” vision in a few years (or even just a few short months) and see how much you’ve accomplished (or maybe how it allowed you to redirect toward something else that you realized you wanted more).
Many of us have dreams + wishes, but they often stay at a distance from us and as something that we’ll reach for “someday”. But I challenge you to do the exercises above so you can bridge the gap + create that dream life you desire! This dream may seem far far off, but it’s only that way because of your thoughts. Allow yourself to believe that you are taking the steps toward getting there and that your life already has so much to offer you, and I bet your “dream day” will appear way sooner than you think!
